Chaffin, Edward and Randy Gonzales. "Institutional Web Portals: Accessing the Inter/Intranet." Tools of the Trade: Teaching in the Gulf: Proceedings of the First Annual Teacher-to-Teacher Conference, Abu Dhabi, 3-4 May 2000. Eds. Syed, Zafar and David Heuring. Abu Dhabi: Military Language Institute, 2001. 102-111.

Summary: The purpose of this project was to design an MLI specific Inter/Intranet web portal that allowed students immediate access to curriculum specific tools and exercises. The portal was also designed to guide and focus students' Internet experiences. Our pre-design observations concluded that students, while being excited about interacting with the Internet/Intranet, were frequently frustrated by language, links and content they could not understand or use effectively without intense personal guidance. The opportunities for real language learning the Inter/Intranet offered were being frustrated if not negated by the inability of teachers to provide this intense, one-on-one personal guidance to each member of a class. The MLI Student Page attempted to provide a structured portal for accessing the vast amount of student specific content stored on the MLI Intranet and to provide a dynamic, exciting, and focused start point for interacting with the Internet at large.
