Chaffin, Edward and Randy Gonzales. "What's your CALL philosophy?: A Survey on Teachers and Technology," QTEN, Doha, Qatar. 30 Apr. 2005.

Abstract: Institutions have embraced technology, investing huge amounts of time and money in state-of-the-art CALL labs to ensure that students have access to the latest learning tools. But how are the CALL labs actually being used? There is a growing concern within the EFL community that the technology is not being utilized to the fullest. As members of United Arab Emirates University¡¯s Educational Technology Committee we are looking at ways to address this concern.

Our presentation will highlight the findings of a detailed survey of English language teachers at UAEU. With approximately 250 teachers of various nationalities, UAEU provides a large sample of teachers that should be representative of English language teachers in the region. The survey delves into questions of experience, attitudes and practice; and gives us a better understanding of how teachers use the CALL lab. In our presentation we will focus on areas that we see as problematic and look at some possible solutions. Participants should come away from our presentation with a greater recognition of the various CALL philosophies and methodologies being employed in the CALL labs and how that corresponds to their own philosophy/methodology.
