  Employment    LSH English Preparatory School

EFL Instructor LSH English Preparatory School
987-15 Dae Jaem Dong, Nam Gu
Pohang, Kyung Buk 790-826
August 2002 - April 2004 Republic of Korea

My return to Korea was predicated both by the desire to return to classroom/CALL lab teaching full time and by more personal reasons.

Personally, my wife and I felt it was extremely important for our new son to be immersed in Korean culture at the earliest possible time and to be close to his extended Korean family. In the future, Korea is probably not where we will live for any great length of time so we felt it was important for our son to experience the culture then rather than missing out later on. Personally, our stay in Korea was fantastic and we hope Lewis will later be able to recall some of the great times we had there.

Professionally, LSH offered an ideal atmosphere for me to practice the teaching, assessment and materials development skills I had gained over years of experience in the EFL field. In addition, the focus at LSH on academic writing allowed me to bolster my experience in teaching process writing and allowed me to introduce new and exciting CALL aspects into the writing curriculum. LSH also offered new challenges: mainly elementary and young adult EFL education.

Skills     Experience

Teaching   Taught and created materials and assessment methods for adult, beginner to near-fluent, language courses
Taught academic writing courses using texts that included, among others, the Tapestry and Mosaic writing series, TOEFL (TWE) and TOEIC preparation courses
Taught beginner to near fluent level elementary and young adult content based English courses using the ESL Text/Activity Book Series (2-8)
Taught young adult language courses using Let's Go, High Five, Side by Side, Comprehension Plus and English, YES! Series in addition to a variety of popular children's literature texts including A Single Shard

Assessment   Developed and implemented an ongoing, non-intrusive speaking and listening proficiency assessment guide for adult learners that focused on peer critique and reflective analysis of contextualized oral prompts and role plays
Created, administered and scored a listening proficiency test for students matriculating from primary to secondary school

Materials Development   Created and modified activities, particularly with regard to listening and speaking activities, that supplemented the wide variety of texts being used at LSH.
Writing for academic purposes was a cornerstone to all young adult courses I taught at LSH. Frequent journaling was mandatory for those courses as was active participation in peer-editing sessions. I made use of a number of writing related resources in these courses including MS Word applications and web based process writing tutorials.
