An Investigation into the Relationships between Student Attitudes towards Instructional Language Policy and Motivational Tendencies

| Abstract: This dissertation reports on a study which aimed to gauge how students at one national university within the UAE feel about the implementation of an English-only policy at their university and how these attitudes correspond to the broad motivational tendencies displayed by this unique population. Qualitative and quantitative data collected from forty (40) student participants over the course of an academic semester was analyzed in an attempt to address these issues. Findings suggest that students generally do not support the University's instructional language policy and are primarily motivated to study the English language through instrumental means. These findings suggest that the relationship between the attitudes expressed by this student population and their motivational tendencies is largely one that may result in a decrease in willingness to continue English study beyond the stage where proficiency is overtly assessed. Suggestions for policy emendation are included. |
